사람들은 종종 '취향'이라는 말에 모든 가치 판단을 중지한다. 언젠가부터 '취향'이라는 말은 '제 꼴리는 대로'와 같은 뜻이 되어 타인은 판단할 수 없는 절대성을 갖게 되었고, 누구라도 이를 거부하면 그는 민주사회의 적인 양 공격 당하기 일쑤다. 그러나 본래 '취향'이야 말로 한 인간의 정신성을 판단 가능케 하는 중요한 척도였다. 취향 혹은 취미의 고상함은 한 인간의 정신 세계와 학식, 인품, 고결함에 대한 안목 등 실로 많은 것을 알 수 있게 해주는 지표다. 오늘 날 가장 큰 문제는 '취향이 각각 다름'이 아니라 오히려 취향이 모두 같고 이로 인해 취향의 가치가 상실된 데 있다. 오늘날 정작 다른 건 취향이 아니라 수준이다.
