Levit's' Always': Revolutionizing E-commerce with Discovery

Levit, the orchestrator of the mobile-based collective buying platform 'Alwayz,' has successfully garnered an investment influx of 60 billion Korean won (approximately $51 million) in a Series B funding round. The cumulative capital amassed by the company to this date now exceeds an impressive 869 billion won (approximately $739 million).

DST Global Partners presided over this financing round, with Bond Capital also making a debut contribution. Additionally, previous investors such as KB Investment, Mirae Asset Capital, Mirae Asset Venture Investment, Korea Investment Partners, GS Ventures, GS, and Klip Ventures continued their financial support. This capital infusion arrives only nine months post the closing of a 13.3 billion won (approximately $11.3 million) Series A2 round in September of the preceding year.

DST Global, a distinguished venture capital firm globally, has a stellar track record of leading investments in corporate giants like Facebook, Twitter, Alibaba, and ByteDance (TikTok). Bond Capital, hailing from Silicon Valley and operating globally, is recognized for its annual 'Internet Trends' report, offering insightful analysis on the current and future landscape of the global internet industry. Their portfolio boasts investments in renowned companies such as Airbnb, Uber, Spotify, and Canva.

Launched in September 2021, Alwayz is a mobile commerce app that has impressively garnered a registered user base of 7 million, a monthly active user base of 2.5 million, and a daily active user base of 1.3 million, all within a span of one year and nine months since its launch. In parallel to this user growth, its monthly transaction volume has surpassed 40 billion won (approximately $34 million), a testament to its growth, reflecting in its advertising revenues outpacing commission revenues.

The service that Alwayz offers is a unique discovery-based commerce model that fuels purchasing decisions through incredibly affordable products and recommendation algorithms. It engrosses its users on a daily basis through various engaging entertainment elements. It has been observed that the bulk of Alwayz' users naturally stumble upon and purchase affordable products rather than actively searching for them.

With the injection of this new capital, Alwayz envisions an accelerated growth trajectory in the Korean e-commerce market while also setting sights on global expansion, thereby pre-empting the discovery commerce market, an emergent trend and global innovation.

In the words of Chae Dae-kwon, General Partner at Bond Capital, who made their first investment in this round, "The comprehensive commerce industry seldom witnesses innovation. To challenge the established behemoths, it is paramount to surprise customers with prices, speed, and convenient service, which is a Herculean task in a saturated market. Nevertheless, Alwayz has achieved this feat through an unwavering commitment to user experience and value." He continued, "Despite being a small team of under 20, Levit has succeeded in building a platform that is used daily by over a million people in various categories like groceries and clothing. We are eager to foster more innovations in the e-commerce and entertainment sectors in unison with the Levit team."

Adding to the sentiment, Cha Seung-hyun, Team Leader at Mirae Asset Capital, a recurring investor in this round, disclosed, "Alwayz has pioneered a fresh model of e-commerce that rectifies the deficiencies of traditional e-commerce in terms of traffic inflow, retention, and commercialization. They have become the leading e-commerce platform in Korea in terms of average usage time and average monthly purchase frequency within just over a year of its service launch. A growth in users and transaction volume typically leads to a decline in operational indicators, but Alwayz has achieved the unusual feat of improving operational and cost efficiency amidst a user and transaction volume surge. With traditional e-commerce growth rates stagnating in the global market, discovery commerce, an amalgamation of entertainment and e-commerce as exemplified by Pinduoduo and TikTok, is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 26%, accounting for 16% of the entire global e-commerce market by 2025. Given these considerations, we made the decision to amplify our investment as we believe Alwayz is still in the nascent stages of its growth cycle."

Jae-yoon Kang, CEO of Levit, offered, "The remarkable rise in mobile usage time globally and the enhancement in smartphone performance are paving the way for discovery-type commerce, a clear deviation from the existing search-based commerce." He further stated, "Our ambition is to evolve into a global enterprise that facilitates consumers worldwide, and not just domestic, to stumble upon and procure high-quality products at significantly lower prices."

The language used aims to mirror the original content's tone and intricacy, thereby offering a balance between readability and complexity.

The anticipation surrounding Alwayz' future growth is palpable, as they continue to stride forward in the volatile e-commerce landscape. This latest influx of capital not only strengthens their financial foothold but also serves as an affirmation of their unique, discovery-centric business model. The global industry is keenly watching the strides of this emergent player, as it not only disrupts established norms but also sets new trends in the discovery commerce domain.

The backing of formidable investment houses like DST Global Partners and Bond Capital further underlines the potential that Alwayz holds in the realm of e-commerce. Their faith in the platform, backed by financial support, bears testament to the market-transforming potential of the service Alwayz provides.

Lastly, it's evident from the success of Alwayz that there is a paradigm shift in consumer behavior. The conventional search-based commerce is gradually giving way to discovery-based commerce, where users are encouraged to explore, stumble upon, and purchase products they might not have known they needed. This switch not only makes the buying process more enjoyable but also introduces a sense of novelty and excitement to the otherwise mundane routine of online shopping.
